I only figured out purely by accident that there is a friendly mode, and have been using it with him since. All of our issues playing together have since gone away, as well.

I double-checked the FAQ, and outside of a reference to it in one of the answers, I didn't find an obvious one for how to turn it on, when you should, or why it exists. It might be a good idea to make this more obvious in the table settings form, so that people that are new to the site can discover it immediately when recommending the site to their friends.
