Cheery DogWelcome To *Marram*!
This is a game played with tiles featuring sand, marram grass and creatures that may be found in the dune ecosystem1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
Cheery DogThe board will always start with the same tile.
Empty Dune at the top
[red]Orange Sand Boa[/red] to the right
[blue]Coral Snake[/blue] head below
and *Worm* tail to the left2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
Cheery DogThis is your hand area.
You will have three tiles to choose from each turn.
Also available to spend across the game are your 7 Welly Boots (reusable) and 4 Spade Cards (single use).3panelholder_84406072000
Cheery DogYour opponent(s) will also have the same hand structure.
All players can see the contents of other players hands.4player_board_85661252000
Cheery DogEach turn you are to take two actions.
Actions will consist of either *laying a tile* or using a *spade card*
As there isn't currently a tile we can use a spade card on (more on that later), we will be laying a tile.5pagemaintitletext000
Cheery DogEach of your tiles are two sides to it, with the Marram Grass running across the different corners, in either "grassy" or "sandy" formats.
this will enable them to fit in various spaces around the board, as the entire side must match in order to be placed.63000
Cheery DogTo start we are going to connect up a worm tail. While both sides of the tile will fit, I have arbitrarily decided the second worm will face downwards.
So select the *left* side of the tile with two worm tails.74010
Cheery DogAnd place it here. You'll notice that it will automatically rotate to fit the cut of the grass.
Hit "Confirm" at the top of the page to complete the action1emptytile_-1_061f152ed6261c10
Cheery DogIn order to score points for a completed worm you'll then need to place a *Welly Boot* on it to claim it as yours.
Or in this case, a "Freak Beast" because it is missing the vital part of a worm, it's "Saddle".
All freak beasts will score at 3 points regardless of length.
once you've placed the welly boot hit confirm at the top of the page to continue.1black4_061f152f0b19c810
Cheery DogAs you may remember, we get to complete two actions every turn.
Complete a second *Freak Beast*.
[tip] As the worm on the board has grass in it's bottom right corner, you need to select the piece that when rotated to line up with the worm that will give the mirrored effect, grass in the top right corner.1261f152f68230b10
Cheery DogThere is no penalty for selecting the wrong piece, as you're allowed to change you mind up until you've confirmed it.
You've managed to choose the correct one, so place it under the worm.1emptytile_-1_161f152fbd9e5a10
Cheery DogDon't forgot to claim it with a Welly Boot.
We'll skip this step for future worm claims.1black4_061f152ff2c3d410
Cheery DogThis piece is a *worm saddle* to get full points of 2 per length of the worm should it be completed with another end piece.
Has they have claimed the end of the worm with their boot the previous action, no further boots can be placed on it, and they have chosen the option of passing on the question of whether to place one somewhere.1black6_061f153caec01d00
Cheery DogSeeing what tiles they have, we can attempt to interfere with the completion of their claimed worm.1player_board_8566125261f153cc77da800
Cheery DogTo do so, we'll need to place a piece next to the worm saddle. I've chosen the worm + sand boa tails piece on the left and put it down to the left of the saddle.1861f155b83f95610
Cheery DogAnd then you get the second action of connecting the worm together.
For delaying/potentially you'd actually want to side that would put the orange sand boa next to their worm, but instead we're going with allowing them to give us points by curving the worm to the right, so select the left option of the double curve tiles.1961f155c9ee07b00
Cheery DogWhich will be placed in here, if they chose to they could share a 10 point worm with us, which would give both players 10 points each, or they can just complete a freak beast for us and take an 8 point worm themselves.1emptytile_-2_-361f155cd1cbdf10
Cheery DogThey've done the choice for taking 8 points but giving us 3.1grass_061f155fc2a02d00
Cheery DogYou'll notice that this tile is slightly different to the others, in that the grass goes across on one side and sand goes across the diagonal on the other.
This is one of the special tiles that is able to be flipped with the spade tiles.
For now though we will just be using it for the sand boa that is on it.113r61f15609e8f0b00
Cheery DogBe careful when placing welly boots on flippable tiles, as if the tile is flipped with a welly boot on it, the welly boot will be *permanently* removed from the game.
As this is the first action of the turn, and we'll be completing the sand boa on the next action, it is safe to place one now.
I'll skip future orange sand boa boot placements after this one from now as well.1orange2_161f156aa33c4110
Cheery DogSelect the tile that you can use to complete the sand boa you just claimed
They will score at 1 point per tile and only require two ends. The only way you can create a freak beast with them is if you make a loop.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61f156b15846a10
Cheery DogAs we placed the boot the previous time (and we're skipping those), you just need to place the tile into the correct location and confirm it's placement.1emptytile_-2_261f156b52bc9410
Cheery DogWe have nothing to gain at the moment from the tiles available to us, so we might as well use them to block in the oppositions boot from potential future use
You may need to zoom out or move the board around to see these actions. To zoom on computer use the mouse wheel, on the mobile devices there's a scroll bar in the top left. To navigate around the board, just drag.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61f1576251c9e00
Cheery DogYou could of course decide to place a boot on this worm saddle, but in this case I decided it wasn't worth placing the boot down seeing we have neither required tile to achieve a completed worm, and neither does the opponent.1emptytile_-1_-461f1576753ae900
Cheery DogPlacing the second worm tile above the other one will potentially block your opponent from scoring points with the coral snake they claimed last round, should they draw a head for it.
[tip]The fact it also makes an 3/4 of a sand patch with just one tile to draw to complete means you should keep an eye out for it in for the rest of the game as you do not want to be giving away points.1emptytile_-1_-561f1576eb83b610
Cheery DogThis tile (and the similar one without the coin and flower) are called *Superhero* tiles.
If you can get them to line up they are magic for point earners, although in this case they're not going to be directly useful to us, so we're going to use it as a throwaway piece.21761f1583cdad1310
Cheery DogThis tile placement effectually removes one of you opponents boots from the game, and there are no pieces that will fit below it, although it could still be freed if they were to use one of their spade cards and picked up of the pieces that would fit in the game to complete a freak beast worm.1orange4_161f2726c69a8a00
Cheery DogThey've noticed what tile we drew, so have prevented us from being able to complete the sand patch everyone had their eyes on.1sand_061f2731e4caae00
Cheery DogHere we are laying claim to a Coral Snake, should we get the right tile to finish it off.
While it's not worth points now, it still needs a boot placed on it now so we're not accidentally giving the opposition an advantage should they draw the needed tile.1blue1_061f34d6c16cf810
Cheery DogTake the Coral Snake Tail piece to complete the potential future snake12561f34d7397deb10
Cheery DogCoral Snakes are worth 3 points per tile they pass through.
To complete one successfully you need a head, a tail and at least one body length.
Anything else will end up being a freak beast.
Pass on playing a welly boot to continue1blue6_061f34d7ba0fcc10
Cheery DogThe opponent has just secured themselves a sand patch they'll be able to claim at any later time.
As they have put their welly boot on an non flippable tile, there isn't anything we'll be able to do to directly stop them.
Sand Patches will score at 5 points per bulge plus 4 for each flower.1sand_061f390dd46caf00
Cheery DogWhat luck! we drew the correct piece to complete our coral snake already, let's put it into play straight away!13261f390df3f50110
Cheery DogWe also managed to complete a grass patch at the same time. Be sure to claim it as well for the extra points it will give.
Grass Patches will score at 5 points per bulge, with additional points for silver (3) and gold (5) coins.
Once you have successfully scored the grass patch, the game will play out until move 150, so hold tight.2grass_161f3fe5f0aa8210
Cheery DogWe're stopping here to make note that this *double saddled* worm would be considered a freak beast regardless of length. [tip]Placing an additional saddle on a worm your opponent has claim or could complete their next turn is a good defence strategy.
They've played it here because we did have the pieces that would be able to complete the worm.1black6_061f503fb578ff00
Cheery DogAnd while we could still make the freak beast worm, it is not the best move available, as we are able to lock in our our future grass patch.
Take this sandy boa crossroads piece.14861f503fe9bfef10
Cheery Dogand put it here.
1emptytile_1_-961f506160454710
Cheery DogRemember that it is a flippable piece when making the selection for whether you want to place a welly boot here.
It will not be completed this turn, so make your decision accordingly.1grass_161f506191fffc10
Cheery DogDon't risk boots on flippable tiles when you don't need to!
To make it not a waste, we'll still need to actually claim it as ours, so for the second turn we need to find the piece that will be able to complete that grass patch.
[tip] In this case the coin will also fit.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61f50626c5a3d11
Cheery DogThey are scoring our grass patch for us with this move, to minimize the points gain against them by taking the gold coin away.
There are will two silver coins though, Click the Hide/show boots at the top of the screen if you can't see them.1emptytile_0_-861f5108760c1400hidebutton 1
Cheery DogYour turn to construct a sand patch. I've already selected one of the tiles we'll be using for it. Place it where the flower will sit inside the sand patch (one bulge) we want to build.1snake_54r_061f67cf4a592610
Cheery Dogand then the boot into the correct location on the tile.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61f67cf8b94c110
Cheery DogYou'll need to play the other piece needed to complete the sand patch now.
Choose the correct one and then we'll move onto being able to use our own spade cards.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61f67cfde5b9110
Cheery DogThe worm tile they just flipped will often have a flipping war when used in a completed worm, but as it has an even amount of flips left, there's no rush to claim it here.
A tile can only be flipped once per players turn.
We are instead going to place the tile I've selected already on a grass patch that has already been claimed at the bottom of the board.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61f67d78c9a6310
Cheery DogWe've now got two grass patches connected by this *superhero* tile, so we can put it to use by flipping it and connecting them both together.
Select the spade symbol on the tile to use a spade card.1spadeselector_2261f67d7fafcb310
Cheery DogClaiming the 2 bulge grass patch is your last action in this tutorial, I hope you're now ready to play Marram.1grass_061f67d863c2ed10
Cheery DogOne last thing, as a wild piece has only just appeared.
It can be connected to any of of the three creature types.
The opposite sides *must* be connected to the same type of creature, and it will function as a normal body length for it.2snake_61_561f67d8b077a900
